National Bath Month is observed every January, celebrating the importance of baths in personal hygiene and relaxation. It’s an ideal time to focus on the benefits of bathing, not only as a self-care ritual but also as an opportunity to ensure the safety and comfort of individuals, particularly elderly people, who may face challenges in the bathroom. Bathing can be both soothing and therapeutic, but for older adults, it may also present risks, such as slips and falls. National Bath Month raises awareness about bathroom safety and the importance of creating a safe environment for seniors.

Here are five (5) tips to help improve bathroom safety for elderly people;

– Install Grab Bars: Place sturdy grab bars in key locations, such as near the toilet, inside the shower or bathtub, and next to the sink. These can provide extra support and help prevent falls, especially when transitioning between sitting and standing.

– Use Non-slip Mats: Place non-slip mats inside and outside the shower or bathtub. This helps reduce the risk of slipping on wet floors, which can be particularly dangerous for older adults.

– Ensure Adequate Lighting: Good lighting is crucial for safety. Ensure the bathroom is well-lit, including areas around the shower, bathtub, and toilet. Consider motion-sensor lights for nighttime use to avoid fumbling for switches in the dark.

– Upgrade to a Walk-in Tub or Shower: Traditional bathtubs can be difficult for seniors with mobility challenges. A walk-in tub or a low-threshold shower with a seat can provide easier access, reducing the chance of falls.

– Use a Raised Toilet Seat: A raised toilet seat can make it easier for elderly individuals to sit down and stand up without straining. This can be particularly beneficial for people with arthritis or other joint issues, as it provides additional support and comfort.

By making these adjustments, caregivers and family members can help ensure that bathing remains a safe and enjoyable activity for elderly individuals.
